Aren't the Pathé films public domain? How, then, can any legal ruling on the battle between Laughsmith and the distributor STOP Paul from issuing the films?

And, if it does somehow, why can't someone else just get hold of the material and put it out? It's not like Laughsmith has a corner on the market if the films themselves aren't copyrighted.

My guess is that there's such little interest that no one has bothered. Besides, what materials are actually available and how much would it cost to do transfers and restorations, etc? I know it takes a LOT of money just to get all the transfers done for the Our Gang silents that we have, and those are only non-professional grade transfers of unrestored 8 and 16mm prints. I can only imagine what it would cost to properly restore and transfer 35mm film. Furthermore, with the general lack of interest or even familiarity with the silent Our Gang films, how could making such a dvd set even be worthwhile financially?

I still hope that something does come out someday, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll keep piecing together toy projector reels until then.

Most of the later Roach-Pathe films (basically those from late 1926 on) are still under copyright.

It's a shame. I don't have the prints (well, okay, except for a reel of "A Pleasant Journey"), but there ARE people on this board who have contributed their time and resources to getting this project off the ground, and experts on these films (like Frodis, who has been more than generous in posting his restorations to youtube from time to time) who would be more than helpful in getting the job done.

There were a number of Our Gang films published in 9.5mm and 16mm (toy projector and Kodascopes) as far back as the 1920s.

I'm betting a number of those titles on the unreleased DVD set were transferred from these, edited together, and fixed up. This surely isn't a project most people would like to take on.

Well it certainly would be interesting to find out what films are only available in fragments. There are only a handful of Our Gang Pathe films that we have that appear to be 100% complete. There are also a handful that we have that are complete sans opening credits. Obviously Cabin Fever was able to whip up some of the films such as Derby Day, Baby Brother and Dogs of War. I wonder if they had more available in such condition. On the contrary, films such as "Sunday Calm" and "Bring Home the Turkey" seem to be very tough to find. I wonder if Maltin and Bann were able to view complete prints of those. Even on toy projector reels, there doesn't seem to be much available from those films.

I just read that Laughsmith lost all the rights to the material to their ex-distributor.

From Laughsmith:
"...Unfortunately, following a protracted legal battle with our distributor, Laughsmith Entertainment is no longer affiliated in any fashion with the Our Gang production which it initiated in 2005. The unfinished materials are now the property of Mackinac Media, Inc. What that company intends to do with the materials, if anything at all, is unknown to (and entirely unsupported by) us at this time.

We understand that another production company has already started work on a definitive Our Gang silents collection, a multiple DVD set which includes all known surviving Pathe era silents, we will post details of this project as they are made available to us.

Thank you for your patience, time and interest.

Sincerely,

Laughsmith Entertainment"

The Mackinac pr1cks will never see light of day again. Especially not at correct running speeds . F**k the universe for allowing this to happen!
