A little surprise in the series of German DVD releases of the Roach-MGM and MGM titles released earlier on RC1. Apparently someone thought the German customers might want to see (or be willing to purchase) the entire feature, rather than just the L&H scenes (previously released as bonus features much like in the RC1 set).

Good news indeed (to an extent - R2 is better than nothing!), perhaps they'll release PICK A STAR some time in the future as well. Since the L&H clips were included on the TCM set, I assumed that killed any chance of those two features getting a release.

What's wrong with RC2 Wink ? Yes, an odd marketing decision, because from what I can gather, these clips were included with the German equivalents of the TCM set as well. Yes, PICK A STAR was always there when PARTY showed up in Germany -- when the film had their belated dubbing (ugh!) and TV premiere in the eighties, or when they were released as a (bilingual!) VHS series. In fact, as "a Laurel and Hardy film" (which neither really is, of course) PICK A STAR would have made much more sense than PARTY. But of course PARTY also has Mickey and the Stooges to offer, and maybe there will be both, eventually. Until then, I hang on to my LD...

What's wrong with RC2? The 14 Euro shipping fee to Canada!! Smile

I think it's just another example of how European culture (and specifically the delightful Germans!) has a much greater appreciation of the work of Mr. Laurel & Mr. Hardy. Or, in this case, Jimmy Durante. The entire film is worth is just for the final line (spoiler alert)... "No Jimmy, not a horse's FACE".

Oh,, that Durante subtlety Shocked ...
Actually, Durante is pretty much unknown in Germany. But, yes, apparently The Boys are still big!

What bothers me slightly about PAL (and others much more than me, I suppose) is the speedup. But in return, you get 20% more lines of resolution and absence of any 3:2 pulldown arefacts Smile. Regardless, when I have a choice, I prefer NTSC too (regardless of where I happen to live at the time), but I'll happily take any PAL release as well (especially for stuff that originates that way, such as Lobster's treats)!
